Travelers to Bocas
del Toro will discover a quaint colonial town first established in
the 1850s by two European families. The original "Banana Republic,"
Bocas was the headquarters of the United Fruit Company. A city of
twenty thousand in its heyday in the 1920s, Bocas
is now a more laid-back town of about 2,000 people. Central park is
a small plaza on the main street of Bocas includes a band shell and
play ground for the kids. It is a gathering place for locals as well
as visitors wanting to visit local craft stands. Weekly produce markets,
clothing
and beachwear shops, boat and diving rentals, are all located within
several blocks of the park. A variety of casual bars, chic restaurants
and ethnic dining opportunities abound in this area, as well as dance
clubs and pool halls that appeal to late-night culture of residents
and tourist alike. Basic facilities such as many small grocery stores,
a gourmet grocery, pharmacies, bank and hospital add to its appeal
to travelers. Best of all, it is only a 3-5 minute ride from Solarte
by boat.
